[ˊhju:stǝn] г. Хьюстон, крупнейший город штата Техас и один из крупнейших в США (1,6 млн. жителей, 4- е место). Подъезжающего к городу Хьюстон ошеломляет: среди ровной техасской прерии неожиданно возникает мегаполис современной архитектуры, протянувшийся на мили во всех направлениях. Гигантские автострады всегда заполнены транспортом. Сотни компаний переводят в Хьюстон свои штаб-квартиры, и каждую неделю сюда переезжают тысячи людей. Город растёт быстрее, чем его муниципальное обслуживание: хаотичность в планировке города ( за исключением его центральной части), неувязки в маршрутах городского транспорта, пробки на улицах, и как результат — загрязнение воздуха. Город ассоциируется с нефтью и исследованиями космоса. Нефть была открыта в начале века в 90 милях от Хьюстона, и вскоре начался нефтяной бум. В 1914 был построен канал, связавший Хьюстон с Мексиканским заливом и сделавший его крупнейшим портом. К 1960-м гг. город стал одним из крупнейших в мире центров нефтехимии, а затем и космических исследований. Мировую известность получил Техасский медицинский центр [Texas Medical Center], где ведутся исследования в области онкологии. Бум сказался и на развитии культуры: Хьюстонский оперный театр, симфонический оркестр и драматический театр «Аллея» [*Alley Theater] получили высокую оценку в общенациональном масштабе. Прозвища: «золотая пряжка Солнечного пояса» [*golden buckle of the Sunbelt], «город космоса» [*Space City], «город магнолий» [*Magnolia City], «Чикаго Юга» [*Chicago of the South].
